Let's face it, with the prices that storage units are selling for these days, were all gambling.
I like to gamble on units with lots of boxes & lots of volume. What kind of units do you like to gamble on?

I prefer well organized storage units neatly stacked, have had best returns on those types of units.
On the other hand you cannot discount the "Rats nest" units. sometimes that can be an indicator that the owner has been forced to take everything they own and put it in a storage unit till they can find a new place to settle.
At the end of the day it is all a gamble, keep your emotions to a minimum while bidding.

Going for the neat units is a good strategy. Then you at least know the person took care of their stuff. Of course, you never know what you'll find in a crappy looking unit... so goes the gamble.

Historically, I've had the most luck with organized and clean units. I have had some surprises in the messier ones though; one time I picked up a unit I wasn't even that interested in because it went for only $300 and had some tools in it...I found a ton of baseball cards from the 1960's in that one; I was stunned!
